The Hartselle Historical Society(HHS) was established & organized at Citizens Bank of Hartselle in 1989. HHS's first president was Ann Sauer who was employed at Hartselle Enquirer and became very interested in the history of the town. Together, Ann and Bettye English put together a group of names from the community to help start the organization.
A group of eleven citizens made up the Board of Directors, Articles of Incorporation were drawn, Constitution and By-Laws were written. From then on we did survey work on houses 50 years of age and older as well as held regular annual meetings with displays and a historical presentation. We were asked by the Chamber of Commerce to start Down Memory Lane on Monday Night of Depot Week.
HHS published a cookbook with some history in it and recipes that were at least 50 years in use. We had postcards printed depicting "then and now" scenes; have saluted industry, firemen, policemen, and city departments; "When Cotton was King"; our outstanding military personnel; some of the important families in our history; sponsored two genealogy classes; saluted the Crabb house (one of the signers of the Alabama Constitution which formed our statehood); started a museum of memorabilia; sponsored an evening of the arts and artists to name some of the things we have done.
